Local High School Students and Area Restaurants to Participate in Food Competition

The Joseph Initiative is teaming up Pro Start students from Clyde A. Erwin High School, Asheville High School, TC Roberson High School, and North Buncombe High School to participate with The Biltmore Estate and Blue Ridge at The Omni Grove Park Inn for a culinary mentoring program and competition. The mentoring program will begin in the fall and will lead to a competition between the two teams that will be held at A-B Tech on November 3, 2018.

The Y.E.S. Chef! Youth Culinary Program and Competition is one of the Brighter Futures Youth Enrichment Service programs offered by The Joseph Initiative. According to Executive Director, Karen Cowan, “We will be teaming up four high school students with the chef at each of the participating restaurants where they will be mentored in the fundamentals of culinary technique.” While working in the restaurant, these teens will learn to craft two healthy food items that will be presented in the November 3rd competition. The winning team will then hold bragging rights for one year.

Board Member and the program’s coordinator, Tim Blekicki, has been seeking out area restaurants to participate in this program. “Our goal with this program is to excite our youth in their passion for the culinary arts and create professional workforce pathways. Ideally, we would like to have two to three more restaurants involved in the mentoring program and competition.” Any interested restaurant owners or chefs should contact Blekicki at [email protected]

At the present time, The Joseph Initiative is also looking for businesses that would be interested in sponsoring the Y.E.S. Chef! Youth Culinary Program and Competition.
